Why is vitamin c so helpful?

In humans, vitamin C acts to slow or prevent oxidation. Oxidation is a chemical reaction which releases harmful free radicals that cause cell damage. Taken in large enough doses, vitamin C can help prevent a wide range of diseases. One particular area that has courted some controversy is the beneficial role high doses could play in the management of cancers. In 2007, a study of 39 terminal cancer patients concluded that vitamin C is a safe and effective therapy to use in improving the quality of life. A year later, research from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases found high doses of vitamin C reduced tumour weight and growth rate in 50 per cent of mice with ovarian, brain and pancreatic cancers.
